Tomorrow will be the first fathers day for me! We returned this passed Wednesday from Guatemala with our new son. Arriving late on the 9th and the next day toured Antigua.

Day 3 we did a Guatemala city tour, visiting the Civic Center

The National Palace

A park with a 100+ year old, large scale relief map of Guatemala

and we drove by the hospital where Colson was born

Day 4 we took a 3 hour drive

to visit Lake Atitlan

and Chichicastenango

Day 5, we met Colson

Day 6, we had to get Colson up at 6:00am to be ready for a 3 hour ordeal at the US Embassy. The place was swamped with new parents/babies and the air didn’t work. Colson was a trooper however.

Day 7, we woke Colson at 5:00am to catch a shuttle to the airport for our 6:55am flight to Houston. The plane was crowded with new adopties and I feared it would be a nightmare. However, the flight was nearly silent. After a quick and actually pleasant stop for immigration in Houston we boarded our flight to Charleston. A large group of friends met us at the airport when we landed.

The past few days Shannon and I have been starting the switch of Colson formula from Guatemalan brands to ours, attempting to get Colson to use an American bottle nipple(Guatemalan’s are different) and getting used to being parents.

Colson is a awesome guy, sleeps through the night and generally only cries for something that he needs(food, changing, nap). He is otherwise happy and playful.

The rest of the photos of the trip are available in my album.

James returned from his 3 week trip to Fiji and Australia this past weekend. Haven’t had a chance to talk to him about the trip except for this(hope I have the story right):

Since the weather was bad(being winter and all), he and his SO decided to hit the Casino near their hotel. 3 dollars into playing dollar slots, he manages to hit the jackpot on the machine. No lights no sirens, just a “call attendant” alert. After the attendant shows up, he finds out he’s won 9K Australian(~6K US).

Lucky Bastard!

Had some watermelon today, first one in years. Dang it was good.

Well I was going to make a long post about my Thanksgiving, but LJ was down at the time and didn’t feel like it later. So here is the abbreviated version:
In general the Outer Banks are way more commercialized than I had imagined. The Audubon Society used to own a great deal of the Northern part of the banks, they have since sold a large beach side portion. It has been heavily developed with many “cookie cutter mansions”.

We stayed in one of them.

The beach was very clean and even though a large portion had been recently eroded away by storms, was quite wide.

The part of the Banks still owned by the Audubon still appeared pristine.

I was surprised to find two very large sand dunes on the banks.

Perhaps even more surprising was this:
Five miles North from where we stayed the road ends. At this point you can drive on the beach. ~20 miles North from this point is the Virginia border. People live in this 20 mile stretch. They live in houses only accessible by the beach. ~15 miles into this area is a store and a volunteer fire dept.

Thats it for my vacation.

Just came across a neat movie i hope to be able to see “JoJo In The Stars“
