Steak Night

It’s been a while since we’ve had an official “steak night”(nudge nudge, brian, poke poke) and I’ve been wanting to try this trick, so I broke down and cooked up to London Broil tonight. I can say without a doubt the “trick” works and the Broil was some of the best I’ve had.

Now that the trauma is sufficiently behind me I can now post about this.
Last Wednesday someone had the idea to go to King Buffet for lunch. For readers that don’t know what King Buffet is, it’s a Chinese/Italian/american/errr… buffet on highway 17. It attempts to put on a facade of class to hide what is in actuality, a dirty Chinese restaurant. The restaurant is also known amongst the lunch crowd as Kickin Bottoms and previously when it was known officially as Super Buffet… Squirty Bottoms or Soggy Bottoms.
It had never actually earned any of the nicknames, until last Wednesday.
Of the four folks that ate there that day, two didn’t make it into work the next day and myself(one of the two) didn’t actually feel completely better till Saturday evening.
Stay far far away…….

Noggin Ache

Having unusual headaches? Use Splenda™? They might be related.
I never get headaches, but recently started getting a dull ache that seemed to get worse. I thought it might be the time of year or something I was eating. About the only thing artificial that I consumed was Splenda, so I switched to Equal(yeah I know…) and they disappeared. A fluke I thought, so I tried added some to my morning coffee and the ache reappeared.

No more Splenda for me I guess.

New restaurant

Had dinner last night at J. Paulz. The name grates on me a little, almost like it’s trying to hard or something. Anyhow, they serve tapas and sushi. The ambiance can best be described as upscale, “adult contemporary”. Several TV’s are mounted around the bar, encroaching on an otherwise pleasant atmosphere. Seating is communal around low tables. Some of the seats are cushioned benches without backs that, in our visit, became uncomfortable after some time. We ordered a shrimp dish and a few sushi rolls. The shrimp was excellent. The sushi was also tasty if somewhat non-traditional.

Mustard Seed isn’t really know for their desserts, at least not in my mind, but last week Shannon and I ate one of the best desserts there we’ve had anywhere, in a long time. It was a two layer cake. The top layer was a dark rich chocolate cake. The bottom was what tasted like a dark flour-less chocolate brownie. A layer of chocolate mousse separated the two. The outside was covered in a light soft chocolate icing, drizzled with a dark chocolate syrup.

Great prose to lament a horrible textarea.

Tried out a new place for lunch today, Momma Browns BBQ. Highlights on the buffet were some really good rutabagas and couldn’t believe this, vinegar based BBQ in Charleston.

My (two time award winning) Chilli recipe

1lb. ground beef
1c chopped onion
4 garlic cloves, minced
1(15oz) can no-salt kidney beens, undrained
1(14.5oz) can no-salt stewed tomatoes
2(8oz) cans no-salt tomato sauce
1 Tbls. dried oregano
1 1/2 tsp. chili powder
1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 to 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp pepper
Enough Sour Cream and Green Onion for garnish.

Coat large saucepan w/cooking spray; place over medium-high heat until hot.

Add:

Meat
Onion
Garlic

Cook until meat is browned, stirring to a crumble. Drain well and return mixture to pan.

Add:

Beans
Stewed Tomatoes
Tomato Sauce
Oregano
Chili Powder
Cumin
Salt
Cinnamon
Pepper

Stir well, cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 20 mins.
Serve w/Sour Cream. Garnish w/sliced green onions.

Makes 7 servings.

My supply of “the stuff” aka coffee finally ran out at home. I decided to help out the Mozilla foundation a little. So for my next buy, I looked up a good local dealer in “the stuff” and purchased some “Worldly Lizard“.

Also I think I broke my toe this morning. Kicked the crap out of our clothes hamper.

One of Shannon’s friends had a wedding recently, they had the usual cute distracting kid for a ring bearer. Several times during the rehearsal, the Pastor would said something about the ring. Each time the Pastor said “ring”, the 4 year old ring bearer would said under his breath “my precious”.

This guy doesn’t look like someone I would believe, but if he is legit, fear the beef!

Gold Medal

Grabbed lunch at the KFC we unfortunately sometimes go to. They have a new gold medal award on the wall. This award is apparently given to KFC’s that excel in customer server, cleanliness, etc. Now this KFC is probably one of the dirtiest fast food restaurants I go to. They have been known to be out of napkins, condiments, even chicken.

Friends of ours from Romania were in town this weekend. Also had some wonderful Russian food at Tanya’s house on Saturday night including Lamb shish kabobs and dressed herring.

I should bring a camera and take some pictures at morning coffee to see if I can get this to happen.

Splitting the check

Why the heck do restaurants have such a big deal about splitting a large parties check?
Consider this…
What is the goal of a good restaurant? To provide great food and a great atmosphere, right? So you go out with to dinner with your friends to, not to name any names… lets say… umm Mimi’s. You sit out on the deck, great view, good food and service. A good time is had by all.
Then the bill comes! 12 people on one check.
Chaos ensues . Dinning experience is ruined.
